People often ask me how I got so flexible. The truth? A ton of hard work; however, I did have a little help. My sidekick? My diet. : )
If you choose to eat acidic food, junk food, processed food, CRAP food, well, you’re going to feel like CRAP. You, like me, have surely made this correlation by now! But here is something that perhaps you may not have considered: The impact of your food choices on your FLEXIBILITY.
The food you eat influences every cell in your body and some foods (acidic and foods void of nutrition) cause an inflammatory response in the body. When this happens, the manifestation can be in the form of skin conditions like eczema/psoriasis/acne, but also muscle pain, joint stiffness, bodily congestion, etc.
Basically, our ability to move freely within our amazing vessel becomes restricted and impaired.
A clean and healthy diet that’s abundant in water-rich fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy “good” fats, really helps keep the bodily tissues alkaline, keeping the acid and toxins out of the muscle! This means more strength, no cramping, well-lubricated joints, less congestion, less constriction, and more flexibility.
My personal flexibility has always reached a peak when I’ve been on good juicing programs. Makes sense. When one is only juicing, the body is receiving tons of alkaline minerals and, at the same time, is quickly eliminating acid build up.
I would not recommend starting a juicing program, however, without guidance! The cleansing process can be complex to manage. There is much more to it, in my opinion, than most people realize before they begin.
So, could your current diet be slowing your postural progress?
Here is a brief list of foods that tend to cause inflammation: sugar, flour products, alcohol, deli meats, too much red meat, dairy products, processed/artificial foods of all kinds (chips, candy, canned soups, cookies, frozen meals, pop, chewing gum), etc! When you choose to eat junk food, your body perceives the food as being threatening, thus again, it produces an inflammatory response.
Reduce inflammation, and keep energy flowing through each part of your beautiful body by drinking LOTS of fresh water and by eating a healthy, unprocessed, mineral-rich diet. As hot yogis, we demand a lot from our bodies, so it’s very important that you properly replenish your system. Dehydration will make you feel stiff and inflexible. This may be a sign that you need to focus more on post-practice supplementation.
Make better choices, and if you’re not willing to do it for yourself, do it for your Paschimottanasana!
