Oh boy, the topic of Soy... where to begin?
When people think of “health foods,” they often think of Soy. Many believe it to be the perfect protein, the ideal “diet” food, the solution to menopause, the cancer fighter, etc.
My opinion of this hero bean however, is naturally, in opposition to the mainstream:)
With the boom of the soybean crop in the early 2000’s, so too came an influx of processed soy foods; tofu burgers and hotdogs, salad dressings, soy protein bars and powders, soy ice-cream and yogurt, etc. Touted as a health food, America jumped on board! What many didn’t and still don’t realize however, is that these “health foods” are full of preservatives / chemicals, salt, MSG, and to boot, 95% of North America’s soy crop has been genetically modified! Would you care for a little biotechnology with your coffee? No thank you!
Processing produces carcinogens and other harmful substances and through genetic modification, the beans molecular structure is dramatically altered. The result? Your body doesn’t know what to do with the food; digestive problems / inflammation, endocrine / hormone imbalance, the production of toxic substances that impede mineral absorption, hypothyroidism, this list of side-effects goes on...
Due to the extent that hybridization and processing occurs with soy foods, not to mention that soy crops are often heavily sprayed with pesticides, there’s just no way (in my and my guru’s opinions anyway) that you’re getting the benefits you think you are, from Mr. Soybean.
How do you feel when you eat soy? Do you experience any digestive disturbances? Do you breakout / acne? Are you experiencing any form of hormonal imbalance? Do your research guys, but intuitively check in with yourself too. Many people are sensitive to Soy based foods, and though it’s derived from a bean (which suggests it is natural in origin), don’t be fooled, this bad boy is born in a laboratory.
Note: Fermented soy (for example: tempeh, miso) has been shown to be much easier for the body to digest and assimilate. Eating fermented soy in moderation (a few times a week) seems to be a healthful and safe choice:)
PS: You can be vegetarian / vegan without relying on soy as your protein source! Please see me if you need more guidance with this:)
