HAPPY Halloween everybody! Happy, until tomorrow's sugar hangover that is;)
It makes sense really, that candy is the hallmark of Halloween. Candy (SUGAR) really is quite
EVIL, and what it does to the body, really is quite SCARY. In fact, brain scans have shown sugar
to be as addictive as cocaine! When consumed, the white stuff triggers dopamine (the chemical that influences the pleasure center in our brain, giving us a temporary (though fleeting) ‘high’.
Sugary treats and mini chocolate bars (which are absolutely full of white sugar), are likely going to be lurking all around you this week; at the office, in bowls at many retail shops, all over your house (after your kids have emptied there buckets / pillow cases full!). Resist the temptation (as much as possible), here's why you might want to...
A few of the most common side effects, of white sugar consumption:
- Weight gain (any sugar not burned, gets stored in your liver, where it’s then converted to fat!)
- Suppression of the immune system
- Acidity of the tissues
- Mood swings (hyperactivity, unstable blood sugar, highs-lows, etc)
- Elevated Insulin levels
- Food cravings
Without banning Halloween (and thus instantly becoming the worst parent ever!), simply try to teach your kids moderation when it comes to sugar. Besides, it’s called a “treat” for a reason!
Perhaps have your kids sort through their candy and make a specific pile with all the treats that they don’t really care for. Then, get rid of these (and don’t worry about wasting, it’s all garbage anyway!). Also, perhaps allow your kids to have just a certain number of treats per day, put the rest in the fridge / freezer to use over the next few months (don’t let them binge all week until it’s all gone!). This will not only make them miserable, but their crazy behavior will make you miserable, too. Remember, sugar is like a drug, and it’s a lot more more powerful than you might think!
Lastly, don’t leave your kids totally unsupervised with buckets of the stuff! Perhaps don’t let them keep it in their rooms at night, for example. I don’t have kids, so if any of you parents have some other suggestions for how to moderate Halloween sugar intake, please leave your comments below!
When it comes to you, perhaps indulge in just a few of your Halloween favourites, don’t eat them just because they’re there, and free. Maybe have one treat a day?
My dream is to open the first Sugar-Rehabilitation Centre for sugar addicts worldwide.
I hope not to see you, or yours, there;)
Happy Halloween, enjoy, but enjoy sensibly -xo!
