Insanity - doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
-Albert Einstein.
Once people begin their journey into yoga, it usually doesn’t take too long before they start looking at how their food/diet may be influencing their practice/experience in the hot room.
Nausea, for example, is a very common experience for beginner yogis; and while there can be energetic or emotional reasons for nausea, sometimes it’s just down- right physical.
When we practice yoga, we compress and squeeze our internal organs. This causes toxins to be released from our organs and into our blood stream. If the body is unable to efficiently release the toxins (because of poor organ function/an excessive amount of toxins), nausea often results.
The other common reason people get nausea is from simply eating too much food too close to class time. For example, fruit and vegetables take approximately 30 minutes to digest, whereas animal protein can take up to 4 hours! So, be sure to check your watch before you choose your pre-yoga snack;)
As hot yogis, we place heavy demands on our bodies, and while there is great opportunity for detox here, we also tend to lose a lot of good stuff, too (minerals and electrolytes that your body NEEDS for proper balance and functioning!). Make sure you put the good stuff back in! The best way to do this? By eating really well:) Replenish your system by eating nutrient-dense and natural foods (fruit, vegetables, nuts / seeds, protein-rich grains like quinoa and millet, “super-foods” like chlorella and goji berries, etc!).
Start to make the connection between what you eat and how you feel in class, and throughout your day as well. Certain foods will clog the body, others will unclog the body. Some foods will energize, some can leave you feeling drained.
Check this blog next week for an exploration into the "The Food-Flexibility connection"!
I think Albert Einstein would agree with me when I say, it’s not rocket science, if you start to eat better, you’re going to feel better. Every cell in your body is influenced by your food choices.
If you are not getting the results you want, and you’re doing the same things over and over, day after day, week after week, it MAY be time to take a closer look at your diet! Or, maybe, you’re just insane;)
