Hormone imbalance shows up in many forms, and for many different reasons (based on what’s happening with our own internal chemistry). However, there is one very specific environmental culprit / contributor to hormone imbalance, and, there are many things you can do to fight back!
“Environmental estrogens” mimic estrogen in our body, and thus have an ‘estrogenic’ effect. Too much estrogen, and we ultimately wind up with symptoms of a condition called “estrogen dominance.” Associated symptoms? Heavy periods, low thyroid, severe PMS / menopausal symptoms, ovarian cysts, acne, breast cancer, and many more! And while estrogen is naturally a female hormone, it doesn’t mean men are immune to the negative effects of this modern day disorder, they’re not! Men exposed to excess estrogen might (for example) experience lowered sperm counts, increased risk of testicular cancers, low-sex drive, weight gain, impotence, etc.
The worst part? These environmental estrogens are everywhere; in food, in all plastic products, in cleaning products, perfumes, etc.
So what can we do to decrease our exposure?!
I suggest you take a preventative / supportive approach, and take extra great care of the main organs in your body that are responsible, for breaking down / eliminating / balancing our hormones; the liver, adrenal glands, and thyroid.
What you can do to support these organs through your diet / food :
Eat clean, whole, and organic food, NOTE: estrogen compounds are often fed to chickens and cattle to increase meat, egg and dairy production. Eeeeek!
Eat coniferous vegetables, they help bind excess estrogen for removal
Be moderate about your alcohol intake
Avoid processed foods, “bad fats,” sugar
Avoid eating / drinking from plastics, plastic leaks environmental estrogen into the our food / water.
Beyond your food, also try to use natural shampoos, lotions, make-up, and all other body care products, avoid all chemicals as much as humanely possible;) Limit exposure where easily possible!
* All of these things will keep your liver healthy (and your liver is responsible for metabolizing hormones!), if your liver is sluggish, you will be more prone to experience estrogen dominance.
Supplements that can encourage balance / assist and strengthen your organs:
Indole-3-Carbynol - enhances the liver's ability to break down excess estrogens in the system
Fiber! - Fiber binds toxins, including xenoestrogens, in the intestines and carries them out of the body.
Vitmain E - low levels of this vitamin have been been linked to high levels of estrogen
Lifestyle / behavioral practices that can contribute to hormone harmony:
Don’t microwave your food in plastic containers (these leaks estrogen into the food)
Get enough sleep
Exercise but don’t over exercise
Limit stress
Strive for balance and moderation
*All these things will help support our adrenals, if the adrenal glands are exhausted, hormone imbalance will become an issue!
Eat natural food, use natural products, and support your body and it’s systems by striving for balance.
When you live in harmony with nature, your hormones will take care of themselves!
